Lipti

In 1985 I started a business called Lipti Art to Wear together with Avi Dayan. My aim was to make t-shirts about Israel for Israelis and tourists.

The subject matter for the designs came from the Israeli landscape. The colour came from the vibrant colors of the Mediterranean, the purple of the desert mountains, the perfect blue sky, the bright yellow sand, the turquoise of the Dead Sea. This combined with a graphic language influenced by Matisse, David Hockney and Milton Avery made for the paintings that were printed onto the softest Egyptian cotton we could find and made into Lipti t-shirts.

I started to see people all over Israel wearing my t-shirts and I began making designs about the people who were wearing them. The subject matter of the t-shirts widened to include what it means to live in Israel: the Shuk HaCarmel, the Gulf War, wild flowers in the winter, and the desire for peace.
